A standard toolbar for use within application content.

A Toolbar is a generalization of action bars for use within application layouts. While an action bar is traditionally part of an Activity's opaque window decor controlled by the framework, a Toolbar may be placed at any arbitrary level of nesting within a view hierarchy. An application may choose to designate a Toolbar as the action bar for an Activity using the setSupportActionBar() method.

Toolbar supports a more focused feature set than ActionBar. From start to end, a toolbar may contain a combination of the following optional elements:

  • A navigation button. This may be an Up arrow, navigation menu toggle, close, collapse, done or another glyph of the app's choosing. This button should always be used to access other navigational destinations within the container of the Toolbar and its signified content or otherwise leave the current context signified by the Toolbar. The navigation button is vertically aligned within the Toolbar's minimum height, if set.
  • A branded logo image. This may extend to the height of the bar and can be arbitrarily wide.
  • A title and subtitle. The title should be a signpost for the Toolbar's current position in the navigation hierarchy and the content contained there. The subtitle, if present should indicate any extended information about the current content. If an app uses a logo image it should strongly consider omitting a title and subtitle.
  • One or more custom views. The application may add arbitrary child views to the Toolbar. They will appear at this position within the layout. If a child view's Toolbar.LayoutParams indicates a Gravity value of CENTER_HORIZONTAL the view will attempt to center within the available space remaining in the Toolbar after all other elements have been measured.
  • An action menu. The menu of actions will pin to the end of the Toolbar offering a few frequent, important or typical actions along with an optional overflow menu for additional actions. Action buttons are vertically aligned within the Toolbar's minimum height, if set.

In modern Android UIs developers should lean more on a visually distinct color scheme for toolbars than on their application icon. The use of application icon plus title as a standard layout is discouraged on API 21 devices and newer.

This method is called whenever a pointer is hovering into, over, or out of the bounds of a view and the view is not currently being touched. Hover events are represented as pointer events with action ACTION_HOVER_ENTER, ACTION_HOVER_MOVE, or ACTION_HOVER_EXIT.

  • The view receives a hover event with action ACTION_HOVER_ENTER when the pointer enters the bounds of the view.
  • The view receives a hover event with action ACTION_HOVER_MOVE when the pointer has already entered the bounds of the view and has moved.
  • The view receives a hover event with action ACTION_HOVER_EXIT when the pointer has exited the bounds of the view or when the pointer is about to go down due to a button click, tap, or similar user action that causes the view to be touched.

The view should implement this method to return true to indicate that it is handling the hover event, such as by changing its drawable state.

The default implementation calls setHovered(boolean) to update the hovered state of the view when a hover enter or hover exit event is received, if the view is enabled and is clickable. The default implementation also sends hover accessibility events.

onRtlPropertiesChanged

void onRtlPropertiesChanged (int layoutDirection)

Called when any RTL property (layout direction or text direction or text alignment) has been changed. Subclasses need to override this method to take care of cached information that depends on the resolved layout direction, or to inform child views that inherit their layout direction. The default implementation does nothing.

onTouchEvent

Implement this method to handle touch screen motion events.

If this method is used to detect click actions, it is recommended that the actions be performed by implementing and calling performClick(). This will ensure consistent system behavior, including:

  • obeying click sound preferences
  • dispatching OnClickListener calls
  • handling ACTION_CLICK when accessibility features are enabled

onDetachedFromWindow

onMeasure

void onMeasure (int widthMeasureSpec,

Measure the view and its content to determine the measured width and the measured height. This method is invoked by measure(int, int) and should be overridden by subclasses to provide accurate and efficient measurement of their contents.

CONTRACT: When overriding this method, you must call setMeasuredDimension(int, int) to store the measured width and height of this view. Failure to do so will trigger an IllegalStateException, thrown by measure(int, int). Calling the superclass' onMeasure(int, int) is a valid use.

The base class implementation of measure defaults to the background size, unless a larger size is allowed by the MeasureSpec. Subclasses should override onMeasure(int, int) to provide better measurements of their content.

If this method is overridden, it is the subclass's responsibility to make sure the measured height and width are at least the view's minimum height and width (getSuggestedMinimumHeight() and getSuggestedMinimumWidth()).

onRestoreInstanceState

onSaveInstanceState

Parcelable onSaveInstanceState ()

Hook allowing a view to generate a representation of its internal state that can later be used to create a new instance with that same state. This state should only contain information that is not persistent or can not be reconstructed later. For example, you will never store your current position on screen because that will be computed again when a new instance of the view is placed in its view hierarchy.

Some examples of things you may store here: the current cursor position in a text view (but usually not the text itself since that is stored in a content provider or other persistent storage), the currently selected item in a list view.

Returns
Parcelable Returns a Parcelable object containing the view's current dynamic state, or null if there is nothing interesting to save. The default implementation returns null.
