Java 8+ APIs available through desugaring

Android Studio now includes support for using a number of Java 8+ APIs without requiring a minimum API level for your app. Through a process called API desugaring, the DEX compiler (D8) allows you to include more standard language APIs in apps that support older versions of Android.

java.time customizations

The following is a summary of potentially behavior-changing modifications to java.time that facilitate running the library on legacy Android devices.

  • The method Locale.getDefault() is used instead of Locale.getDefault(Locale.Category.FORMAT) to look up user preferences. The latter method, as well as the Category enum, is new in JDK 8.
  • Use DateFormat or SimpleDateFormat to look up parsing and formatting patterns. The internal API normally used is new in JDK 8 and not supported on Android. Formatting in ISO Chronology appears unaffected; non-ISO dates and times are calculated correctly but formatted (and parsed) using ISO patterns.
  • Temporal.getDisplayName(Locale) never localizes for built-in field types and instead always returns English names such as "Day", "Week", and "Year".
  • Similarly, chronology names are never localized during formatting and parsing, as this information doesn't seem to be available on legacy devices.
  • Formatting and parsing are limited to most ChronoField constants (except quarters) and only supports ISO chronology concepts such as 7-day weeks, 12-month years, BC and AD eras, etc. For instance, Japanese eras don't work. "Standalone" formats also don't work. This is all due to the necessary localized strings not available through legacy JDK APIs.
  • JapaneseChronology is limited to the 4 "eras" currently defined. Any new era, which historically happened every few decades, would have to be added to the code, and as a result requires app updates.
  • HijrahChronology doesn't support "variants". Android 8 doesn't include any such variants, so this shouldn't make any practical difference.
  • Time zone formatting ("printing") won't localize "generic" time zone names in the rare situation when the Temporal to print doesn't include "seconds". Generic time zone names simply aren't available on legacy devices, only "standard" and "daylight savings"-specific names.
  • ZoneRules by default fall back on java.util.TimeZone. This has limitations listed below. Note that the primary method in this class, ZoneRules.getOffset(Instant), should work accurately whenever data is available.
    • Typically data appears to be available back to ~1900 on tested devices, so queries for 18xx (before the use of modern time zones) will probably return wrong results. Note the first daylight saving occurred in 1916, which is typically covered.
    • getStandardOffset() doesn't work for time periods where a given timezone used a different offset from UTC. Because of that, isDaylightSavings() and getDaylightSavings() may also return wrong results in problematic time periods.
    • nextTransition() and previousTransition() are slow but appear accurate within available data.
    • getTransitions() and getTransitionRules() return empty lists. That's consistent with the spec but may be surprising; use nextTransition() or previousTransition() instead.
