Android Instant Apps: Onefootball increases engagement by 55%

Based in Berlin, Germany, Onefootball is a mobile football application that provides news, live scores, fixtures, results, tables and stats for over 230 leagues and in 15 languages worldwide. Founder and CEO, Lucas von Cranach, started the company as a text-based service in 2008, and Onefootball is now one of the largest sports apps globally.

What they did

Onefootball enabled instant app support by reducing its 20MB installed app down to a 4MB feature module. The team identified most of the size savings by using the APK analyzer, removing or replacing large libraries and shrinking unused code and resources. They also shifted towards a modularized architecture splitting the monolithic core into independent modules, which enabled them to achieve significant size savings.

Since launching the instant app in May 2017, Onefootball's key engagement metrics have increased which include the share of users who read news and the share who consume match content. With their instant app, users are 55% more likely to read news weekly, which Onefootball considers a deeper engagement with their app.

Maxime Blanc-Strauss, Onefootball's Head of Product, responsible for driving the instant apps implementation, said that: "While it took some effort to reduce the size of our app, the increase in the number of news readers made it worth it and we are really happy with the outcome!"
