Keyboard apps and launcher compatibility

On Googlebook, users can't discover or install custom keyboard apps—also known as input method editors (IMEs)—or custom launchers using Google Play. To provide users with a stable and reliable desktop experience, Googlebook supports only native system input methods and launchers.

What this means for your app or launcher

If you develop or maintain a custom keyboard app or custom launcher, keep the following details in mind:

  • Visibility on Google Play: Googlebook users cannot discover or install custom IMEs or custom launchers on Google Play. These apps and launchers remain available on Google Play for other supported Android devices.
  • Action required: No action is required for developers of these apps.

Future support

Google's goal is to foster an open and customizable ecosystem. Google continues to evaluate technical opportunities to safely expand API support to enable custom IMEs and launchers in future platform updates and will provide an update when support for custom IMEs using Google Play is available.
