About Android 14 Developer Preview 2

Developer Preview 2 is now available, with the latest features and changes to try with your apps. This release is for developers only, to help with early development, testing, and feedback. Android 14 Developer Preview 2 is an early baseline build that's still in active development, so the Android system and apps running on it might not always work as expected.

As with previous versions, Android 14 includes behavior changes to help improve performance, battery life, security, and privacy. In some cases, these changes can affect apps until they are updated to support Android 14, so you might see impacts ranging from minor issues to more significant limitations. In general, most apps will work as expected, as will most APIs and features, but please review any known issues listed on this page to get a better idea of what to expect.

How to get Developer Preview 2

You can install this release on any of the following Google Pixel devices:

  • Pixel 4a (5G)
  • Pixel 5 and 5a
  • Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
  • Pixel 6a
  • Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
If you're already running a Developer Preview build, you will automatically receive an over-the-air (OTA) update to Developer Preview 2. Otherwise, see Get Android 14 for details on how to get started.

Remember to update your SDK and the Android Emulator as well before you try out the latest features and changes. The best way to do this is using the SDK Manager in the latest preview version of Android Studio.

Depending on your development and testing needs, you can also get Android 14 in the following ways:

General advisories

Be aware of these general advisories about the release:

  • This release might have various stability, battery, or performance issues.
  • For users with accessibility needs, this release might not be appropriate for daily use.
  • Some apps might not function as expected when running on this release. This limitation includes Google's apps as well as other apps.
  • Android 14 Developer Preview builds aren't Compatibility Test Suite (CTS)‑approved, but they have passed preliminary testing and provide a stable set of pre-release APIs for developers. Apps that depend on CTS-approved builds or use SafetyNet APIs might not work normally on Android 14 Developer Preview builds.

Other known issues

Based on our testing, you might encounter the following issues when using Android 14 Developer Preview 2. These issues are already known, so there's no need to file additional reports for similar issues.

Android platform

  • An issue with the Credential Manager platform APIs causes instability in apps that use them. A fix is available in the latest preview version of the Android 14 SDK, which developers can install using Android Studio. Developers who previously installed a preview version of the Android 14 SDK should completely uninstall the previous version and then reinstall the SDK to apply the fix.
  • After entering and exiting picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, an issue with the system UI causes the screen to flicker when any apps are launched.
  • An issue with the system UI sometimes causes the screen to flicker when a video is playing in picture-in-picture mode.
  • In some cases, video continues playing in the background even after closing an app if the video was playing in picture-in-picture mode when it was closed.
  • A video that is playing in picture-in-picture mode stops playing abruptly if the back gesture is used within the PiP settings screens.

Apps

  • When using a device with a work profile, the Google Play Store app in the work profile hangs or crashes when launched.
  • A blank screen displays after selecting the "Message" option for a recent caller in the Google Phone app.
  • After taking pictures with the Google Camera app, opening the latest picture from the thumbnail in the app briefly displays a green-colored shade over the image.

Android Studio and tools

  • An issue with Android Studio causes a SecurityException to be thrown when attempting to run your app or apply incremental changes any time other than the first time. To work around this issue, fully uninstall your app and then reinstall it on the test device before running your app again. A fix for this issue is in included in Android Studio Giraffe | 2022.3.1 Canary 4 or higher.

Visual media selection

  • When your app requests visual media permissions, if the user grants partial access to their visual media library (Photos/Videos) then later denies this access, your app might freeze, flicker, or stop asking for the permission.
  • If your app uses a custom visual media picker and the user chooses to grant partial access to their visual media library, your app's picker might not immediately show the items that the user selected.
