In addition to other style guidelines, follow these guidelines when working on documentation specific to cars.

Platforms

  • Do: Use "Android for Cars" when referring to both Android Auto and Android Automotive OS, or list both platforms together to clearly indicate that you're talking about both.
  • Do: Use "Android Auto" or "Android Automotive OS" when referring to one specific platform. You can use AAOS as an acronym for Android Automotive OS as long as the acronym has been defined on the page.
  • Don't: Use "Android Auto" to refer to both platforms. Although this is common within Google, it's confusing externally since it's a specific product.
  • Don't: Use "Android Auto Projected", AAP, "Android Auto Embedded", or AAE, which are internal-only terms.
  • Do: Use "Cars with Google built-in" when describing topics that are only applicable to GAS vehicles, such as the Google Play Store and Google Play services APIs.
  • Don't: Use "Google Automotive Services" or GAS, which are primarily internal/OEM-facing terms.

Libraries

  • Do: Use "Android for Cars App Library" or just "Car App Library" when referring to CAL.
  • Don't: Use CAL, which is an internal-facing acronym

Google Play

  • Do: Use "Automotive OS only" or "Automotive OS dedicated track" when talking about the dedicated track for AAOS apps.
  • Do: Use "Mobile release track" or "Standard track" when referencing the track used to serve phones, tablets, ChromeOS, (and Android Auto, which is really just mobile).
  • Do: Use "in a track" when referring to an artifact (APK or App Bundle) being released through the Google Play Console.
  • Don't: Use "on a track" when referring to an artifact (APK or App Bundle) being released through the Google Play Console.
  • Google Play services
    • Do: Use "Google Play services".
    • Don't: Use "Google Play Services".
  • Google Play Console
    • Do: Use "Play Console" or "Google Play Console".
    • Don't: Use "Play console", "Google Play console", or "Google Play Developer Console".
  • Google Play Store
    • Do: Use "Google Play" or "Google Play Store". Prefer the latter if there is any ambiguity about which part of Play is being referenced.
    • Don't: Use "Play Store"
