2017 has been another year of growth and success for app and game developers on Google Play. We're honored to be the platform of choice for so many. We were thrilled to see so many of you at industry events – like GDC, Gamescom, and Slush – and our own events including I/O 2017, Google Developer Days, and Playtime. We've just uploaded Playtime sessions and the team has been busy posting on Medium with strategies and insights to help you achieve your business goals. We look forward to continuing to help you engage and delight people around the world with varied, useful, entertaining, and enriching experiences in 2018 and beyond. Please enjoy our recap of the year.

We continue to invest in Android, which now powers over 2 billion monthly active devices, to make it a smart, fast, and enjoyable ecosystem to develop for. We've released Android Oreo 8.1, the best performing and most secure version of Android yet, and we introduced Project Treble to help the latest releases reach devices faster. We updated Android Studio to 3.0 and added Kotlin as an official language. Android apps now run great on Chromebooks, the revamped Android TV is all about content, and the smarter Android Wear 2.0 lets you leave your phone at home. Android Auto is being used in more cars and devices, and we've made exciting progress with Android Things.
Your app
Your app
A higher quality app means happier users and a virtuous cycle of better ratings, more installs, and higher engagement. To help you improve your app, we completely revamped the Google Play Console. The Android vitals dashboard helps you identify and fix performance issues. New tools such as app signing, the release dashboard, and the device catalog mean you can release your app with confidence. Our ranking algorithms on Google Play now consider quality and engagement, to reward developers offering the best experiences and help people find apps they'll love. We've also updated tools like the acquisition report with retention data and reviews analysis with more languages, and we added new subscription features, to help you increase your business performance.
Your store
Your store
We've made improvements to Google Play, so it remains the destination for people to discover and re-engage with your apps and games. We've improved personalization, added more curation including revamping Editor's Choice, and introduced new store experiences for games, instant apps, and in-app events. We take maintaining trust in the store very seriously and launched Google Play Protect, which scans more than 50 billion apps every day. The Play Security Reward Program also helps find vulnerabilities in the popular apps on Play and benefits everyone when we scan all apps for any issues found.
Your success
Your success
We've been inspired by more of your stories. We celebrated your achievements with the second Google Play Awards and, just recently, the end of year Best of 2017 lists. We launched Android Excellence, which updates each quarter, to showcase the best quality apps and games. We continue to spotlight indie games with the Indie Corner and festivals & contests around the world. Indie games developers can enter contests right now in Europe, Japan, Korea, and Latin America. We're also helping startups find success with Early Access and other benefits offered through Start on Android. We ran a charitable collection for World Food Day, where purchases from 12 apps went to benefit children in need who receive meals through the UN World Food Programme.
Your future
Your future
2017 has been another year of innovation at Google and has brought new growth opportunities for developers. We're adding features for rapidly growing business models, such as subscriptions, and helping you reach billions of people who are coming online. Now is the time to optimize your app for Android Oreo (Go edition), which offers a great Android experience for new entry-level devices. We're also bringing features to hundreds of millions of Android devices which can help you increase engagement and retention. These features include the Google Assistant, Android Instant Apps, and ARCore, our platform for augmented reality at Android scale. Virtual reality continues to be an exciting area too, and we updated Daydream alongside our new family of AI-powered consumer devices. Look out for much more in 2018!
